Frequently asked questions

Tattoo FAQ

Does a tattoo hurt?

This is a question we hear all the time & is one that is kind of hard to answer. It really depends on YOU & your pain tolerance. However, I tell everyone that they DO hurt! You need to prepare yourself for some type of pain & discomfort. There's a needle that's going in & out of the first epidermal layer of skin. Smaller tattoos will hurt less, while larger tattoos will take more time & cause more swelling & pain.

How long does a tattoo take?

It's hard to say exactly how long a tattoo will take. Times vary with each client. A larger tattoo can take HOURS & multiple sessions. Sometimes the client may need to take breaks, which can lead to longer sittings. Tattoo JoJo always tells her clients to plan their whole day in the studio & not to make other plans on that day. The most annoying thing you can do is rush the tattoo artist. So please don't do it!

How much does a tattoo cost?

Our studio minimum is $60, for something VERY tiny. However, most small to medium tattoos can start at $120. The final price of your tattoo will vary with size, detail, & placement. If Tattoo JoJo is planning on spending the whole day with you, you can expect to spend anywhere from $680-$1,000+.

Can you use numbing cream or pain killers?

Tattoo JoJo always does her best with keeping the client comfortable & experiencing less pain. A lot of times she will spray the tattoo with Bactine Max, which has 4% lidocaine in it. It's a great product to really sooth the tattoo. However, it doesn't completely numb the skin. Now if you are planning to get a larger tattoo, she will sometimes use a numbing agent on you prior to getting tattooed. Keep in mind that numbing agents don't last forever & when it wears off, it can cause severe pain & a shock to the skin, because your skin never got use to the feeling of actually being poked... making it more hard to sit through. Some creamers can actually affect the tattoo making it a lot harder for the tattoo artist to work the skin. If you're worried about pain, Tattoo JoJo & Studio does sale a 200 MG full spectrum CBD ointment that works great for easing some pain & discomfort. As far as painkillers, we do not recommend taking aspirin before coming in for your tattoo. This can cause extra bleeding, reduce clotting, which will impact the quality of your tattoo once healed.

Can tattoos be removed?

Tattoos can definitely be removed with laser removal. Laser removal can be EXTREMELY painful. Keep in mind that we however do not offer laser removal. Our suggestion would be to get a cover-up tattoo. However, with cover-up tattoos, your design choice is limited, so don't get pissed if you can't get the awesome tattoo you had originally wanted!

Why are consultations a requirement?

Yes, everyone is required to do a consultation before their actual appointment. We are more of a private studio & not a street shop. Consultations are FREE & usually last anywhere from 15-30 minutes. Consultations are great because it allows for Tattoo JoJo to sit down with you & really get a feel for what you are wanting done. During your consultation she will take notes, look at any reference pics, properly size you, go over placement, & give you a price quote. If you live far but are thinking about traveling to Tattoo JoJo & Studio, we do offer live video consultations to help with that. Live consultations are great because they eliminate drive time.

How old do I have to be to get a tattoo?

You MUST be at least 18 years old to get tatted within our studio. Tattoo JoJo does not tattoo minors, even with parent consent. Everyone is required to bring in proof of identification such as a license or photo ID. No identification, no tattoo!

Why do I need to pay a deposit? Are they refundable?

After your consultation, a deposit will need to be paid, in order for Tattoo JoJo to begin drawing your tattoo design. No deposit, no drawing. Deposits are NON-REFUNDABLE & NON-TRANSFERRABLE. The deposit guarantees that you will show up at the given time for your scheduled appointment. It lets Tattoo JoJo know that you are serious & won’t be wasting her time.

Can designs be sent to me before my tattoo appointment?

No drawings or drafts will ever be emailed, texted, or sent through social media for you to view. This is to prevent taking her design & going someplace else with it. Photographs & copies of the draft will not be permitted within Tattoo JoJo & Studio, unless Tattoo JoJo gives you permission. All drafts/designs are the property of Tattoo JoJo. If the finished design is not to your liking when you arrive for your tattoo appointment, Tattoo JoJo will allow for revisions to be made. However, you may be required to reschedule your tattoo appointment. If you would like to review your tattoo before your actual tattoo appointment, Tattoo JoJo does allow this & will schedule a day for you to come in for revisions. Revisions include minor changes & alterations to the design concept you all had agreed on. However, if alterations consist of drastic changes, like going bigger with the size or adding more detail, prices can easily increase. If huge changes are made, like changing the whole design concept, a new deposit will be required & the original deposit will be forfeited, as payment for Tattoo JoJo’s drawing time.

Can Tattoo JoJo do cover-ups?

Yes, Tattoo JoJo specializes in cover-ups. Keep in mind though that you may not be able to get the design you are wanting, as it may not cover the old tattoo. Tattoo JoJo is all about quality work. You may want to consider a blast-over tattoo as an option.

Can you tattoo over scarring?

This would be a question to ask during your consultation, because it depends on how the scar has healed & how deep of a scar it is. Usually though, scarring can be tatted.

Do I need to shave before getting tatted?

Trimming the area is always generous, but leave the shaving to Tattoo JoJo. Shaving the tattoo before your appointment can actually irritate the skin.

Do you tattoo hands, fingers, soles of feet/palms, inside of mouth, etc.?

Tattoo JoJo doesn't mind tattooing the tops of the hands, but keep in mind that all other places will usually not heal how you would like them to. They can fade drastically & sometimes even fade completely out.

Can I bring my children with me?

No children should be present in the tattoo area. We recommend that you arrange for someone to watch your child/children before showing up for your appointment. It is hard for Tattoo JoJo to concentrate on your tattoo when kids are present. For certain events, children may be welcome. We will let you know in advance.

What should I do for aftercare?

After your tattoo is finished, Tattoo JoJo will wrap the tattoo with a second skin. The second skin will need to stay on for 3-5 days. This will help speed up the healing time for your tattoo & reduce any scabbing. It's highly recommended to leave it on like you will be instructed to by Tattoo JoJo. The longer the better. You will also be given more instructions & tips to follow from Tattoo JoJo, so please pay attention.

Are your inks safe?

Tattoo JoJo uses only professional ink from reputable suppliers. She also keeps track of all inks that were used on your tattoo, for future touch-ups or if you have some type of reaction to a certain ink.

I'm going on vacation, can I still get a tattoo?

We recommend waiting at least 4 weeks before going on your vacation. Your tattoo needs time to heal. You will still need to wear sun protection on the tattoo to prevent it from fading.

Can I get a tattoo while I'm sick?

No, you should never get tattooed while your sick. If you are sick, please re-schedule your appointment. If Tattoo JoJo suspects you are sick, she will ask you to please leave & re-schedule. We do our best in keeping the studio safe for both you & the tattoo artist.

How should I prepare myself before a tattoo?

Before your tattoo appointment you should get some rest, stay hydrated, take a shower, & eat something before your appointment. Please try to arrive at least 10 minutes before your appointment & make sure to come with identification. We can't stress it enough.... PLEASE MAKE SURE TO EAT! Eating will help to prevent passing out.

Are tattoo touchups free?

Tattoo JoJo always wants her tattoos to look nice. You are a walking canvas piece of her work. Each client will be allowed 1 free touch-up within the first 6 months of receiving your tattoo. After the 6 months, a $25 fee will take place for touch-ups. It will be your responsibility to take care of your tattoo & making sure you follow up with Tattoo JoJo. Touch-ups arent alwasy necessary & Tattoo JoJo will either approve or state that a touch-up isn't needed if she's satisfied with it. However, she always wants to keep you happy.

I'm not 18, can I still bring a parent with me to sign a consent sheet?

No you can not. You must be 18 years old, with proof. Tattoo JoJo doesn't tattoo minors.

What are the sanitary conditions of getting a tattoo?

At Tattoo JoJo & Studio, we always make sure to keep it EXTRA clean. Tattoo JoJo only uses pre-packaged needles & will open them up from its package in front of you. Everything is disposable. Before & after each session, everything is wiped down with a medical grade cleaning solution solution, such as Madacide. Madacide kills Influenza A, HIV, Hepatitis A, B & C, TB, MRSA, VRE, and SARS. Cleaning is done every day before the studio opens. This includes wiping down all counters, tables, work-stations, tattoo beds, & door knobs. All floors are mopped, things are dusted, & trash is taken out.

How do I set up an appointment?

Your first appointment will be a consultation. Everyone is required to do a consultation. You can either call our studio to set that up, or go directly to our website and fill out the short "tattoo consultation" form. To book an appointment over the phone, please call 219.323.3029. If we don't answer, chances are we are probably closed or busy with a client, so it's important to leave a voicemail so we can call you back. To book online, please go to tattoojojo.com/book-online.

Do you take walk-ins?

Our studio is more of a private studio & based upon appointments. Walk-ins are more of a street shop & we don't define ourselves as a street shop, so no, we do not take walk-ins. We have a whole process in which everyone's tattoo is thought out & planned. Sorry, but rushed or quick banger tattoos are not for us.

Do I tip my tattoo artist?

Tipping is not required, but your tip is always greatly appreciated by your tattoo artist. We recommend tipping like you would any other service professional.

Can I bring a friend?

Yes, you absolutely can bring a friend! We understand that bringing someone with you during your session can really ease the stress & fear of getting tatted. However, Tattoo JoJo ask that you please only bring ONE person with you. Don't come in with a group of friends or family members. Big crowds can really be a distraction for Tattoo JoJo & it's hard to focus on quality with a bunch of people in the booth. Tattoo JoJo may allow for more than one person to come with you during your tattoo session, but please ask her ahead of time. If she approves, they will be asked to sit in the waiting room. The only time groups will be allowed is if EVERYONE is getting tattooed on the same day... for example, getting matching tattoos.

Who should not get a tattoo?

If you have a weak immune system, pregnant, breastfeeding, have a communicable disease, take medications like blood thinners, or are under the influence like drugs or alcohol, then you should not get tattooed. Remember, your health should always come first!

What if im late to my appointment?

Arriving 30 minutes late without notice can result in rescheduling & additional fees. Excessive rescheduling, short notice to reschedule & excessive late arrivals can all result in inconvenience fees or deposit & service being forfeit entirely. If you feel you are going to be late, please call the studio in advance & leave a message if we do not answer. The studio number is 219.323.3029.

Can I get my tattoo wet?

Tattoo JoJo will wrap your tattoo with a second skin wrap whenever she's done tattooing you. You will be asked to leave it on for about 3-5 days. This wrap is amazing & will help speed up the healing time of your tattoo. It will also help to keep it clean & prevent anything from getting inside your tattoo. You will also be able to shower with it. Showering should be the only time you get it wet. Please DO NOT submerge your new tattoo in water, like soaking it in a bath or swimming at the beach.

Can I be out in the sun or tan after getting a tattoo?

If you have to be out in the sun, please keep your tattoo covered & use a sunscreen to protect your tattoo. We also recommend that you DO NOT go tanning. You want to wait at least 2-6 weeks for your tattoo to heal fully. Your tan can wait!

Can I get my deposit back?

Deposits are NON-REFUNDABLE & NON-TRANSFERRABLE. The deposit guarantees that you will show up at the given time for your scheduled appointment. It lets Tattoo JoJo know that you are serious & won’t be wasting her time. If not on any type of payment plan with Tattoo JoJo, ALL PAYMENT MUST BE PAID IN FULL at the end of your service during checkout. Failure to pay in full will result in legal matters. This includes paying a deposit with a debit/credit card, changing your mind & then stopping payment. The money is no longer yours & belongs to Tattoo JoJo for her time.

What is the difference between a street shop & a custom studio? Which one are you defined as?

Street shops are more for those who like a fast pace environment & wants to get in & out with their tattoo. Usually consultations or appointments aren't required because they accept walk-ins & traffic is usually high. If you're someone who wants something like a flash tattoo from the wall, or likes to be surrounded by a lot of people, then a street shop would be for you. Custom studio's are more private, require consultations, & are based upon appointments. Tattoos are never rushed & are well thought out & planned. You get more of a personal experience with the tattoo artist & usually relationships are built this way. If you are looking for a tattoo that is designed specifically for you, or you are someone who suffers from anxiety or prefers a smaller crowd, then a custom studio is where you may want to go. So what kind of studio is Tattoo JoJo & studio? We are definitely more of a custom studio.

I would love to get tattooed by Tattoo JoJo, but I live far. Could I do a video consultation instead of making two trips to the studio?

Yes, you absolutely can! Tattoo JoJo has tattooed several people that live in different cities & even states. We understand that driving hours for a 15-30 minute consultation can be a bit much, so we want to save you a trip by allowing a video consultation.
